Formative and Summative Assessments

There is a great deal of discussion on assessment these days in educational circles. The terms "formative" and "summative" are used a great deal.

Alabama Reading Association Conference

We had four representatives from our lower school that attended the ARA conference here in Montgomery last week. The opening keynote speaker was Denise Brennan Nelson. I encourage you to check out her children's books: Someday is not a Day of the Week, Buzzy the Bumblebee, etc. Each of her books teaches a wonderful lesson for young and old alike. Denise is also a motivational speaker and reminded us that each person has a morale bank account and you cannot give away what you do not have inside. She encouraged us to make deposits into each other's accounts so that we stay full and are ready to give away to others without becoming bankrupt! Here are a few other points from Denise's keynote address:
*Goosebumps---an inspiration to quality--give such good service to others that it gives the person goosebumps!
*Take care of yourself so you can take care of others
*Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
*"Idea" is that which is seen by the mind's eye; you have to keep your imagination turned on to see an idea!
*Encourage children (and yourself) to use your imagination!
*When you have a great idea that won't go away . . . do something about it! Use it!
*You are helping little acorns become mighty oaks!
*Story of 2 ditch diggers: One ditch digger was asked what he was doing and he replied, "what does it look like, digging a ditch." The other ditch digger was asked what he was doing and he replied, "helping build a cathedral." It is all in how you look at it.
*Daily Goal: I would feel great at the end of this day if I: _________________ (only you can fill in your blank!)

"Rigor" what does it really mean in education?

If you have not already heard the word "rigor" used in reference to education, you will be hearing it. People have different views of this word used in association with education, however, read for yourself and you decide!

The blog, 21st Century Collaborative, is a rich avenue for academic discussion. Click here to read about the meaning of the word "rigor".

This study is another great avenue for research on the word "rigor". Click here to take a look at this qualitative study on rigor.

The Importance of the Teacher in the Christian School

I am going to refer back to our summer faculty read, Learning from the Best, for this post. I want to continue to reference chapter by chapter in this great book as we review it during the year. We discussed chapters 1 and 2 in recent faculty meetings. The title of chapter 3 is "The Importance of the Teacher in the Christian School." The purpose statement from Wheaton Academy was referenced in Chapter 3: "to nurture growth through excellence, relationships and service all to the glory of God." Wheaton Academy also referred to its teachers as "living curriculum" teachers. I watch this on a personal level here at TPS daily. Thank you for being "living curriculum" teachers and for being Jesus to our families and to each other. We are blessed with a dynamic learning culture at Trinity School that is happening behind each door as our teachers seek excellence. Students surveyed in our book, listed "teachers" as the most important thing in their school career (even ahead of peers and friends)! My prayer for you today is for you to realize your importance within your classroom and the lives of all those you touch at this school.

Using Your Professional Development Funds

Many of you at one time or another may have been a member of ARA (Alabama Reading Association) or IRA (International Reading Association). I would like to encourage you to investigate a membership to IRA ($39) and a subscription to the professional journal, The Reading Teacher ($30 for in print/online access). This is a total of $69 for one year. The Reading Teacher has been improved and revamped for easy access for your particular area of interest. Please click here to access the most current edition of The Reading Teacher. You will be able to read abstracts for each individual article. The articles are research based and hit many areas that we are working on at this time (not just reading). If you would like to subscribe and use your school funds (I strongly encourage this!), please see Linda on accessing the school credit card to take care of this so you have no exchange of your own funds. This can be done on line in about 5 minutes! The magazine comes 8 times a year: Feb., March, April, May, Sept., Oct., Nov., and Dec. Subscribing to a professional journal is an important part of staying up to date on the ever-changing journey of education.

Intentional Classroom Practices!

As I walk through the halls and watch you engaging with learners, our August meeting comes to mind. We made a list of words that we felt described what we wanted happening in our classrooms. I see those words everyday all over our campus! The following are a some of the words from our list: collaborative, learning, students, teachers, families, Christian, preparation, intentional, lifelong learner, different experiences, technology, hands on learning, comfortable, happy, encouraging, and building each other up. Thank you so much for being intentional about our learning environment. What a joy it is to observe and experience it!

Devotional Book: Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

Many of you may have the devotional book called Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. What a great little book. Over a week ago, several of us were using that devotional book for our weekly prayer time here on campus. The devotional for that day (Sept. 2nd) has stuck in my mind ever since. Let me share a little bit of that devotional to kick our week off:

When you depend on Me continually, your whole perspective changes. You see miracles happening all around, while others see only natural occurrences and "coincidences." You begin each day with joyful expectation, watching to see what I will do. You accept weakness as a gift from Me, knowing that My Power plugs in most readily to consecrated weakness. You keep your plans tentative, knowing that My plans are far superior. you consciously live, move, and have your being in Me, desiring that I live in you. I in you, and you in Me. This is the intimate adventure I offer you.

I pray for all of us a great week as we serve Him at Trinity.

Thank you!
I would also like to say "thank you" to all those that helped Second Grade Grandparents' Day be such a huge success for the families involved. I ran into several people today that were touched by that special time. Thank you to Mrs. Ahna, Mrs. Aitken, Mrs. Faulkner, Mrs. Jeffcoat, Mrs. Sprague, Mrs. Pippin, Mr. McCoy, Mrs. Stabler, and multiple parent helpers.

National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 5th!

We will celebrate National Day of Prayer with an informal time of prayer on Thursday morning, May 5th, in Willett Hall. Our PTO is hosting this event and will have a light breakfast available for parents and students. The theme for this year is "A Mighty Fortress is our God" and the scripture verse is Psalm 91:2 "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
You can find more about the National Day of Prayer and its history by clicking here.

Lower School will be helping the tornado victims here in Alabama with a service project later this week. An email to teachers and parents will be sent out on Monday with the specifics of the project. Living like we are "Easter" people!

I was reminded by the pastor today to live like I am an "Easter" person---to live with the excitement of the Resurrection in my daily life! What a great reminder! I pray you enjoyed a blessed Easter weekend.

I want to thank Mrs. Ahna and our third grade students and teachers for blessing us with a wonderful chapel last week! As one teacher said, "the chapel led us right into Easter worship!"

Mrs. Ahna had a busy day last Thursday! We want to thank our first grade choir, Ahna's Angels, and our first grade teachers for traveling to Mulder Church last Thursday to perform their final concert for this year! Mrs. Ahna and the Angels did a great job blessing all those in attendance!

Please have a wonderful week as we head into our final weeks for this school year!

Authentic Learning Experiences!

I read an article this week reminding educators of the importance of making a learning experience as authentic and real as possible. This can be tough, as all of us know, due to many factors---time, space, money, etc. After reading that article, I began to think of how often I see authentic learning experiences all over our campus! It is constant! This week alone, I was able to observe or participate in several incredible learning experiences just in lower school. All of that credit goes to you, the teacher! You are the dreamer, the planner, the organizer . . . .the one who makes it all happen. I know you don't really have the time but you make the time because you know that if it excites you . . . .it will excite and ignite learning in students! Thank you for dreaming big and collaborating with others to develop authentic learning experiences for our students. Have a blessed weekend as we head into Holy Week and Easter Sunday! Easter Blessings!

I certainly enjoyed being a part of this wonderful "market day" authentic learning experience! (complete with "starbucks" paper money and a truly authentic cup of "Starbucks"! Thank you, third grade!)

Catching His Perspective on Things!

I don't know about you but this weather is my kind of weather! To be able to get out and walk in the sunshine is truly a gift! I enjoy walking with friends but it is extremely important that I have my alone time while walking to pray and praise. Yesterday was one of those days! As I walked and listened to praise and worship music, I was reminded of how much outside stimuli we, in a school setting especially, are subjected to constantly on a daily basis. I so encourage you to find time to get alone (I know this is hard with children at home) and get still before Him--it truly makes a difference in our "perspective" on things. As I was walking and praising, I thought of Kathryn Wolf who spoke here in Montgomery this week---at our school and at a larger gathering. The one word that comes up every time she speaks, it is the importance of God's heavenly, eternal "perspective" in all of our daily situations. She always reminds the crowd that most people in her situation would not be joyful (like she is) but they may not have her perspective on it given to her from God so she can handle the situation victoriously through Him. As I kept walking yesterday, I was reminded that His perspective is what we are striving for in all situations and this only comes from studying His word, uniting in worship with other believers, and spending time with Him so we can "catch" it! I hope you enjoyed your weekend and had some "perspective" time with Him.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven . . . a time to be silent and a time to speak.
Ecclesiastes 3:1,7

Oh, what a difference a few words can make!

This is the time of year to reflect and think about those in our class that may need one more parent phone call of encouragement or an email of reassurance of how much you have enjoyed teaching their child. I heard a teacher sharing the other day about taking the last 5 weeks of school and calling or emailing 4 a week until she had made her way through her class. It certainly ties a bow on the end of the year and reaffirms to all where you stand on their child no matter what twists and turns the year may have taken. You have invested much this year and I thank you for your humble hearts and Christ like attitudes that encourage me daily and hold me accountable. I am blessed to have the honor of working beside you. We are in the home stretch for this 2010-2011 school year! Good job!

1:1 laptop programs: Where are we now?

We are very blessed at Trinity to rely on a great company called ISM (Independent School Management) for guidance and information in all areas of school life. A recent article shared by ISM gave me a great deal of information on some of the very questions and concerns we have regarding our 1:1 laptop program. I wanted to share this valuable article with you. Please click here to read.

Some quick reminders:

*Please be sure you allow time for practice on the ITBS format this coming week as we near testing week: April 4-8.
*Thurs., March 31, 8 a.m. -12 noon, Group Pictures will be made in the US library.
*Notify parents through email/blog of early dismissal, Friday, April 8th 11:30!
*Monday, April 4, all school faculty meeting

Each Friday from now until school is out our US students are selling Chik Filet biscuits in WH 7:15 a.m.-7:50 a.m., for $2.50 to be donated to the March of Dimes. They will work hard to be sure those are on time and eaten prior to coming into the classroom at 8 a.m. so class disruption does not occur. Thank you for your support of this project.

Words of Encouragement

Two different people visited our campus recently. Both followed up their visit with a personal note mailed to me the old fashioned way! You don't get many of these anymore so they definitely got my attention. Inside each note the person shared about feelings they had while visiting our campus. Let me share a sentence or two from each one:

"It was wonderful to see so much technology, diversity, and growth. The simple love for learning demonstrated by your teachers and students was refreshing!"

"My visit to TPS was like a dream of what a school should be like!"

I share these words with you to encourage you as we return from our break. Thank you for always going the extra mile! Your heart for Christ shows in so many ways even for those simply visiting our campus for a few minutes. Thank you for allowing Him to use you at Trinity to touch lives.

24 Hours that Changed the World

If you have not read the book 24 Hours that Changed the World, I strongly encourage you to do so. This is the perfect time--Lent. This book clearly explains the events of Holy Week and the whole atmosphere at the time of the arrest and crucifixion of Christ. Hamilton uses all four gospels and clarifies the different accounts in each. There is an accompanying reflection book to go along with it as well. This book is perfect for personal or group Bible study. It is a short read so if you start now you can read a chapter or so a week and be done by Easter Sunday! Click here for more information on this powerful book by Adam Hamilton.

Almost Spring Break!

It is the week before Spring Break! Here are a few reminders:

*Monday, March 7th, All School Faculty Meeting in WH, 3:45 p.m.

*Thursday, March 10th, Report Cards
*Friday, March 11th, 12-3 p.m., Science Fest!
*March 14-18, Spring Break!

Please remember from time to time to check out my lower school parent blog. I reference the site Common Sense Media as a help site for the selection of movies, books, games, apps, etc. You may want to check that out and add it to your blog as well! It is a valuable tool.

I want to share with you some words of encouragement! I recently received two notes from recent visitors to our campus. They used the following words to describe our school:

*My visit to TPS was like a dream of what a school should be like!
*It was wonderful to see so much technology, diversity, and growth!
*The simple love for learning demonstrated by your teachers and students was refreshing.

Be encouraged and know that your efforts do not go unnoticed!
Have a blessed week!

Important Last Weeks!

Please take time to enjoy these last weeks of school with your students. You have worked hard to establish these relationships with students and parents. Please get plenty of rest, continue to dedicate each day to the Lord, and make great memories with your precious students. The last weeks of school can be a blur due to the fact that we are all getting tired. Do whatever it takes to slow things down and reflect on the unique relationship that you have with each of your students. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

Does texting shorthand hurt reading skills?

There is a great deal of discussion today concerning the texting shorthand that is developing as more and more people rely on texting for communication. I wanted to share an article that I found that may help shed some light on this trend. Click here to read.

Thank you!

Thank you for the super support during the two days of kindergarten testing. Those two days are only possible if we all work together--it is truly a team effort! It is such an honor to speak about Trinity to incoming parents but it is even more of an honor to experience your classrooms on a daily basis. It is truly a blessing!

As I visit classrooms, I am continually overwhelmed with the amount of care and prayer that you put into your classrooms. I made a mental list last week as I was visiting. These are some of the things I am so thankful for as I visit:

*loving, warm, relaxed atmosphere
*intentional planning so curriculum flows and is integrated together whenever possible
*passion for teaching children and being at school
*patience in all things (and I do mean all things)
*understanding for unique circumstances
*asking questions that require students to think more deeply
*allowing children time to answer (and feel comfortable gathering their thoughts)
*the kind and positive way in which you answer and approach students
*intentionally using technology in the best way possible for a certain subject area

Bless you. I know these things don't just happen by accident. You are doing a great job!

Upcoming dates:
*Mon., 2/7 --Midterm Reports and All School Faculty Meeting 3:45 p.m. WH

Excitement at TPS!

Exciting days are ahead at Trinity, and they begin right now!

As most of you probably already know, Trinity is blazing a new trail in the River Region by becoming the very first Apple 1:1 school in our area. Schools who run a 1:1 program issue computers to each individual student. Students use the computers at school, and take them home as well. This concept promises to revolutionize education.

For the last three years, we have spent countless hours planning, visiting regional 1:1 schools, consulting, and making our campus ready to support such a program. We even took a trip to "The Mother Ship" (aka Apple Headquarters) in Cupertino, California, for an exclusive executive briefing as a major step in the direction of making Trinity School the school of tomorrow.

As of today, our entire campus has wireless Internet connectivity. We are also utilizing three Apple mobile laptop carts throughout the school. These carts are loaded with 25 MacBooks each, and may be taken throughout the school building. Our recently-renovated middle/upper school library is state of the art, and includes a 21st century research room. Our lower school addition, set to open this fall, will also include a state of the art library for our students in grades K-5.

The exciting news is that we are ready to put laptop computers in the hands of every student in grades 7 and 9 NEXT YEAR! After that, the program will begin to spread throughout the school. Time will only tell how the a 1:1 laptop program will ultimately look, but we believe that it will take the academic program at Trinity to the next level.

Parents of next year's 7th and 9th grade students have already received information regarding this new program, and they have already been invited to a special event that we are having at the school next week to learn even more information about the exciting events to come. However, we would like to extend an invitation to this event to any parent who may be interested in how Apple computers will change the face of education at our school. You are most welcome to attend.

Apple 1:1 Information Meeting
Tuesday, January 18, 2011
6:30 p.m.
Willett Hall

This event should answer many of the questions you may have about the new direction we are taking here at Trinity. However, any of us on the administrative team would be happy to discuss the program with you at any time.

I hope to see you Tuesday!

Upcoming 5K Race and Fun Run!

Run the Race 5k and Fun Run 2011
Plan now to join us Saturday, February 26th for a 5K & Fun Run. This is a community event with refreshments, children's activities and awards ceremony. Proceeds from the race support our P.T.O. projects to beautify the school grounds while promoting healthy lifestyles through exercise. Our course begins and ends at Trinity Presbyterian School, conveniently located just off Carmichael Road. Professional timers will be in place and awards will be given for the overall male & female finishers plus top finishers in each age category. T-shirts will be given to all 5K and Fun Run participants registered by February 10th. Both runners and walkers are welcome!

Race info and registration available on the Trinity website or by clicking here!

Accelerated Reader Seminar/Math Facts in a Flash Info

Renaissance Learning offered a limited attendance (and I do mean limited--they only allowed a school to register 2 people total!) seminar (in Dothan) on Accelerated Reader and other Renaissance Learning products like Accelerated Math and Math Facts in a Flash. It was extremely informational. They should offer more of these in the future and I would like us to send as many teachers as possible. You really get to collaborate with other teachers by hearing their questions and concerns about ways to effectively use AR as well as the other products we do not use at this time. (It may be 2 teachers at a time if they are limited attendance but it will be worth it!)

Keeli Osmer and I sat down and pooled our notes concerning AR. I have tried to put this into bullet points for you below. Some of these are simply thoughts to ponder as we reflect on our use of AR and our overall teaching strategies in the classroom.

*They set the tone and began the conference by showing the YouTube Video: Shift Happens (Click here to view)
*A child will continue a task only if he/she feels successful! (Personally, I think that goes for adults too!)
*Reading needs to be a successful story--ALWAYS!
*The suggested amount of reading time per day (to make a measurable jump in reading scores) is 35 min. per day. (Ponder this when considering requirements for next year!)
*Students often do not like school because we haven't changed the way we are teaching even though their brains work in different ways due to technology and the flow of information today.
*Students' attention spans are 15 min. or 1 min. per grade level up to the 15 min. A good suggestion is to strive to change activities or type of activity approx. every 15 min. to help keep students engaged.

I have asked for a quote for Math Facts in a Flash, this is a computer assessment, student practice, and bookkeeping program for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Please take a moment and click here to investigate Math Facts in a Flash. This is from the same company, Renaissance Learning, that puts out AR.

*Note the addition of Kids Know It under the Quick Links Section of this blog! Click here to investigate!

Upcoming Dates:

*Thursday, Jan. 13th, Incoming Kindergarten Open House
*Tuesday, Jan. 25th, Kindergarten 100th Day Celebration
*Friday, Jan. 28th, Second Grade Grandparent's Day Celebration

Have a great week and thank you for making TPS an awesome learning community!

Happy New Year 2011 !

It's that time again . . . second semester! I pray you had a great break and found some time to relax and reflect! I have come upon several good tutorials to help us transition to using Pages as our word processing choice on our macbooks! Please click here to begin a great tutorial by Apple. This has also been added under the Quick Links section for future reference! I think you will find that having Pages to use certainly helps us raise the bar (and fairly easily!) on the documents that go out from our classrooms and offices! Happy typing to us all and a very happy second semester!
